ukuleleHIGH is a natural fusion of interests, experience, passion and learning. January 2009: 28 people with ukuleles braved a bitter snowstorm to gather for the first time at a historic Toronto pub. The Corktown Ukulele Jam has since grown to over 1,000 members. Our Wednesday nights, special events and workshops produce a lot of smiles. We satisfy fundamental aspects of human nature like community orientation, analog interaction in an increasingly digital world and an innate desire to achieve results through collaborative effort and energy. The Corktown Ukulele Jam is an incredible incubator. You learn a lot when you've produced 150+ events. It has allowed us to develop a keen sense of what works and how to get it there by breaking it down into manageable bites. No doubt, we're really ernest about the uke. But we're even more ernest about our specific niche in the ukontinuum. Some write, some perform, some sing, some solo. We teach - and that's what we're good at. THE NOW AND NEAR FUTURE Our aim is to produce workshops for all playing levels with a uke-centric focus on playing technique, theory, multi-part group playing and singing and music styles like Blues, Jazz, Latin, Hawaiian, and Roots. Steve will continue to helm workshops that make sense, but is enthusiastic about an expanding field of top drawer expertise to lead style and advanced technique workshops. We expect to take 101 to the road. To that end we're considering appropriate space in places that make routing sense. We travel really easily with a computer, instruments and a video projector. Beyond that we're comfortable in any space that can comfortably seat 25 with a projection screen and washrooms. The more unique the better. Access to a bar is a bonus for all. House workshops R us - 20 is ideal. Yes, we can come with ukes. |
